In the course of fifty years (1877-1927) Leoš Janáček created a remarkably extensive volume of music theory studies from which many grew into larger, later published, works. Janáček published most of his theoretical writings in the very moment the last ink dot dried. His studies found their way to the magazines Cecilie, Hlídka, Dalibor and, above all, to Hudební listy which he was editing for the whole course of its existence (1884-1888). Music theory writings by Janáček were not created as a product of a scholar. His theory studies and essays are works of a composer-theorist whose compositional potential develops with his own explanations of theories related to music: psychology of music perception and creation, physiology of music, acoustics and experimental psychology. Janáček-theorist influences Janáček-composer and vice versa; however both these forms do not neglect the pedagogical aspect which gives the shape to his writings. For his whole life Janáček passed his opinions of music theory to the students of the organ school and later conservatory. And it was typical of Janáček to present his writings in his characteristic literary style which may enlighten even the most pragmatic matter with surprisingly poetic "slip".
